There are just 3 of us. We're currently based in Warsaw, Poland. Me and Bartek are programmers that can build everything - it's always just a matter of time that we need to spend on a certain project. Karolina (my girlfriend) knows everything about Shoujo Manga and she is our guide. We're working as a team for 5 years now. The idea of Mangaido has started in the Fall of 2014. At the beginning we wanted to host Shoujo Manga of a biggest Japanese publishers (kind of Spotify for Manga) (old video: http://youtu.be/8UbVyapGB-k ). We had opportunity to take lot of money for this project from European venture capitals but we decided to take everything on ourselves. At the beginning of 2015 we flew to Tokyo to talk with Kodansha, Hakusensha, Shueisha, Kadokawa and some other publishers. Of course, all of them were not interested in further cooperation and they didn't seen any serious opportunity in such idea. Then, we went to Tokyo's Comiket and we saw thousands of amateur Japanese artists that was publishing by themselves their awesome comic series. We changed the idea of Mangaido and from that point we started to build website where artists from all over the world could publish their comic series to be translated to other languages by community. First version of Mangaido was ready at Fall of 2015 but we finished translation tool at the fall of 2016. This is the strongest side of Mangaido - translation tool. At the begining of spring 2017 we published our coin system and from now on every comic creator can earn money via our website. I am sure that at the end of 2017 we will grow to a big community of translators willing to help amateur artists by translating their artworks in couple of hours and that we gather here lots of talented artists. We're 100% committed to our mission - help artists by translations and good earning platform.
We're back from London. Next stop China - we're going there this Friday - hope to vlog there a little :D btw. I just fixed thumbnails, title and description that shows when you share comic series on Facebook for example - I accidentally broke it when I was deploying new comic series reader :P
I just deployed another zoom feature for new comics reader!!! Zoom for mobile devices for webcomic-type chapters :D Just use your two fingers to zoom a page :D Enjoy! Soon zoom features for desktop users :)
I published today zoom feature for mobile book-type reader so that you can zoom using two fingers on your mobile devices - this is working currently only for chapters published as a book, not webcomic. But I'm already working on zoom feature for webcomic and desktop book reader - I hope to publish it this week :)
Here you can see how book reader looks like:
We added book type feature week ago and we have already 5 comic series published as a books on Mangaido :D
Today I deployed fixes for our new comics reader on Safari and Firefox - mostly fixes for book layout reader . I still have to add some features like "Liking" which I forget to implement :P Also Facebook share button seems to be broken... If you have any suggestions let me know! :D Thank you @mikou_kayu and @kurocartoonist for your feedback! :D
I improved the performance of new reader. Let me know if you find some new issues I should fix :D
I fixed new comics reader :D So from now on artists can set how they want their comics to be presented:
- Webcomic (scrolling down page by page)
- Book (layout similar to book - left and right page)
If you want to use Book layout remember that pages should have equal height (like pages in book). You can also set direction of reading (left to right / right to left). There is also an option to use first page as a book cover. So first page will be moved out of left/right book layout.
Artists can also set background color on which their comics will be presented - this is mostly important for Webcomic layout.
From now on Mangaido will store info about your reading progress and did you read entire chapter. Soon I will push update that will allow you to see reading progress on list of chapters (progress bar below chapter cover). I hope this is a nice step towards creating kind of bookshelf for readers - still lots of features needs to be done to fulfil this idea :D
Let me know what should be fixed first or if you'll find some bug I should fix. I'll be releasing updates more often now, since this huge release is finally finished :D I'm so happy :D
I published yesterday new comics reader. I already see some bugs, like the one that translation balloons are sometimes not visible. I'm now working on fixing this issues. Let me know if you'll find any. I'll take care of them asap.
I finished work on new comics reader app and I'm now reviewing code for possible bugs. I just wanted to show you the amount of work I had to put into this "simple" feature https://youtu.be/6BEWCQj67ak
New comics reader is alllllmoooost there :P
I started working on it November 07 2017 and it took me much more time than I thought it will. I spend so much time on it that I'm really angry at myself :D I feel like this task made me to much out of work that is much more important, which is keeping you guys informed, happy and entertained about our community that in just one year grow soooo much!
New comics reader features:
- New "Book like" layout where you can read page by page by swiping sideways
- "Book like" reader gives artists possibility to show their works that were created with a book in mind
- "Book like" reader gives artists possibility to set reading direction - left to right or right to left
- "Book like" reader gives artists possibility to set first page as a book cover
- "Book like" reader will have special "Next" button that will highlight translation balloons automatically one by one
- but there is still default way of showing comics as a "webcomic" - page below page like it is currently
- artists can set color of reader's background on which comics is presented
- there is now a menu on the bottom of the screen with all necessary things like "Comments", "Translations", "Chapters" etc.
- From now on reader can keep track of which chapters they read and what is the current page they left reader
There is also some more improvements here and there but most important are the one I listed above. I created this reader with mobile devices on a first place and currently all the work that left is taking care of how reader is looking on desktops. I hope to finish this this week and show you results :D
